Resumen
T H E DO M INICAN REPUBLIC occupies the eastern portion of the Island of Santo Domingo. It covers an area of 19,332 square miles, and has a population of 1,544,549', averaging 79.8 persons per square mile. Population centers are the provinces of: Santiago, in the interior, with 202,385; La Vega, also in the interior, with 174,368; and Azua, in the
Southwest, with 169,520. The Distrito de Santo Domingo, in which is located Ciudad Trujillo, the capital and largest city of the republic, has a population of 95,848123. The second city is Santiago, in the province of that same ñame.
