Resumen
The Dominican Republic is located in the eastern portion of the island of Haití, one of the largest of the West Indies, lying between a latitude of 17 36’ 40' and 19° 28’ 20” north and
a longitude of 68 18’ and 74 51’ west of Greenwich. Its boundaries are the Atlantic Ocean on the north, the Mona Channel on the East, separating it from its closest neighbor of importance, Porto Rico, the Caribbean Sea on the south and the Republic of Haití on the west. From Puerto Plata, the principal northern port of the Republic, there is but a distance of 1225 miles to New York City; to Havana, Cuba, 710 miles and to Southampton, England 3925 miles. On the Southern side of the island it is even closer to its important neighbors, the distance from Santo Domingo City being but 230 miles to San Juan, Porto Rico; 500 miles to La Guaira, and 810 miles to Colón.
